Kampong Battle - Stat Squishes & New Boss


Lunar New Year is approaching fast and I was determined to fix all the issues with Kampong Battle.

First up was the stats squish. Damage numbers during the initial release were getting ridiculously high, which would be problematic if I decided, in the future, to 'expand' the game and add content with new bosses and stuff. I basically changed the damage formula and how attack and defense stats interacted with each other, and drastically lowered the numbers. Made a table and did some calculations too. Much more comfortable with how things are now.



I realized while playing through the game that having ALL abilities unlocked right from the beginning is a tad overwhelming, especially for someone who is not familiar with the game and has no idea what each skill does. I decided the best way to get them to learn what each skill does is for them to use a skill a certain number of times before a new skill becomes available. There will then be a prompt that a new skill is learned, and the player can go and read up on it under 'Skills'. Hopefully this works and players are curious enough to do so.



Speaking of notifying the player about new abilities being available, I added a small '!' to let players know when their bag is full as well. Full bag = no equipment drops! Players will now see that '!' when their bag is full after finishing a fight and obtaining the loot.

Of course, since I was going to update some stuff, I decided I might as well add in a new area and a new boss (picture above shows the new area). Enter Madame Buaya ('buaya' means 'crocodile' in Malay). I made her on Blender sort of as a joke, but I turned out to really like her, so decided to put her in the game. She fights in an upscale resort, which ties in well with the previous area being beach themed. Being the 'final' boss this expansion, she is one tough croc!

And finally, of course, an advanced Happy Lunar New Year to anyone reading this! Previously, the Event boss was Namwons, the mysterious snowman. This time, players get to face off against Dong-Dong-Qiang, the 'Lion' that is commonly seen during Lion Dances. As with all other event bosses, equipment stats will not help (so even if you wear the best equipment, your attack and defenses are nullified), but their passive effects will work. Talents will also work against DDQ. Also, as always, DDQ drops legendary armor (very powerful armor that will massively help against normal bosses).

Overall, it was quite a lot of work. In addition to the above, I had to design new equipment and new mobs for the new area, but with grit, I managed to pull through! Hope you guys enjoyed the read!
